Three Memory-Making DIY Valentine’s Day Gifts

February 2nd, 2017

Candy HeartsLooking for a way to create a custom-crafted Valentine’s Day experience that go beyond the classic cliches of a dozen red roses and chocolates? Following are three ways that residents of apartments in San Mateo can make the celebration memorable.

A Customized Gift Basket

Shopping for a customized gift basket should be almost as fun as receiving one. Buy a big, gorgeous basket, and fill it with small things that you know your loved one will love. Ideas include lusciously scented soaps, bottles of specialty syrups and liqueurs, books of romantic poetry, tickets to an upcoming concert featuring a favorite performer, jewelry and other personal adornments, and other assorted small items that your Valentine would like. To make it really fun, collect stuff all year round and hide them for when the time comes to put them all together in a customized gift basket.

A Weekend Travel Experience

The gift of a weekend getaway is just what many people need to give them the necessary boost to get past the winter doldrums. Booking a weekend in a lovely romantic spot within driving distance is a great way to have a relaxing mini vacation — as an added bonus, many of the cozy inns and charming bed-and-breakfast establishments in nearby Napa Valley may be offering seasonal discounts during this time of year. If you and your Valentine are nature lovers who relish solitude, February is a great time for a sojourn to California’s Lost Coast — winter has a special stark beauty in this area, and you’ll be far from the maddening crowd. On the flip side, if the two of you are urban environment aficionados, book the best hotel in San Francisco that you can afford and soak up that city life for a couple of days.

A Windowsill Culinary Herb Garden

This is an excellent Valentine’s Day gift for everyone from serious cooks to those who’d rather dine out the majority of the time. Serious cooks know the value of having a supply of fresh culinary herbs on hand. Even those who don’t spend much time in the kitchen will appreciate the visual appeal and delightful aroma provided by a culinary herb garden. They will also appreciate having fresh ingredients on hand for when they do cook or need a fresh sprig of mint for a cocktail of cup of tea.

If you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind after all the hectic holidays of 2017, give us a call. We’d love to give you a tour of our community.

4 Thanksgiving Decorating Tips

November 5th, 2016

There are many ways to decorate the home for fall holidays, but it’s the big, extravagant displays that get attention in magazines. Television shows also tend to feature homes where it seems like an entire crew was needed to get everything set up. This can make the idea of decorating your San Mateo apartment for Thanksgiving seem rather daunting. Fortunately, decorating for this holiday really isn’t that hard. Here are some tips for getting beautiful results without an overwhelming investment of either money or labor.

The Media Features Exceptions, Not Norms

The first step to a stress-free Thanksgiving decorating experience is to remember that media portrayals are exceptional. It looks like it requires an entire crew to get the effects they show because they literally hire one to do up their sets! Nobody who has any real-world experience with decorating really expects you to replicate those overdone looks in your apartment.

Keep it Simple

Thanksgiving is a day where everyone wants to pay attention to the food, and perhaps, the game on TV. Nobody wants to have to be super-careful to avoid ruining any decorations; that wouldn’t be relaxing at all. Therefore, decorations should be kept simple. Since Thanksgiving celebrations often involve large amounts of people, the decorations should also be either out of reach or indestructible.

Go for Natural Decorations

Thanksgiving’s celebration date makes it easy to tie its decorations in with the season. The same is true for Halloween. This makes it so that you can keep the bulk of your decorations in place all autumn long and just change key elements to match the specific holiday. One of the easiest ways to do this is to focus on natural fall decor like colorful leaves, dried twigs and similar materials. Since it can be hard to come by naturally-colorful leaves in California, it’s a good idea to stop at a craft store for your supplies.

Pumpkins Are Still Great

Pumpkins aren’t just for Halloween. As fall produce, they’re equally at home on Thanksgiving. The only difference is that now, they should be left not carved. Small ones look great on the table, and serving pumpkin pie for dessert will complete the theme perfectly.

By following these tips, you can get your entire home to look special without an inordinate amount of effort or expense. To see our available floor plans and think about how you’ll apply your personal touches this Thanksgiving, just stop by our office. We’ll be glad to show you around.

Between August 1 and 6, follow Ethan Hunt on his fifth top-secret mission, brought to viewers worldwide by the screenwriter Drew Pearce. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation is a great choice for the entire family, but keep in mind it is rated PG-13.

  • If you’re looking for a movie that is kid-friendly, however, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ might be the better choice. Embark on an animated journey that follows Sorbet and Tagoma’s efforts to resurrect Frieza with your kids on August 8 or 11.
  • If you prefer a healthy mix of action and science fiction, the latest movie from Fantastic Four franchise might be for you. The movie runs between two and five times a day between August 6 and 13.

February 10th, 2015

We have fairly temperate weather in the San Mateo area, so it’s easy to keep plants in containers outside all year around. But container plants are very susceptible to pests and disease even during the dormant winter months.

Among the many events in San Mateo coming up, Master Gardner Clinic on March 1 is where you can get all your questions answered by certified University of California Cooperative Extension volunteers.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., these master gardeners will be available at the Kohl Pump House in San Mateo Central Park to answer questions on all kinds of gardening topics.

Whether you’ve always wanted to start a container garden or have a full fledged jungle on your patio, you will benefit from the wise counsel of these knowledgeable volunteers.

If you’re having a problem with one or more of your container plants, bring in a sample of the plant, soil, or pest in a plastic bag and one of the master gardeners will identify the problem and suggest solutions. Not many events in San Mateo can boast this kind of service!
